Umwelt- und Biotechnologie
Die Natur ist eine unerschöpfliche Quelle von Konzepten und Rohstoffen, um Chemikalien und Energie herzustellen und zu wandeln.
Dafür müssen wir erkennen und verstehen, welche biochemischen Potenziale und ökologischen Prinzipien in der Natur stecken, und sie mithilfe innovativer Umwelt- und Biotechnologien für den gesellschaftlichen Bedarf nutzbar machen.
Herausforderung
Ob Klimawandel, wachsende Nachfrage nach Ressourcen oder umweltbelastende Stoffströme – es ist nicht nur eine Energiewende notwendig, sondern eine Kehrtwende hin zu einem produktorientierten und integrativen Umweltschutz. Kreisläufe müssen geschlossen werden, um ressourcen- und energieeffizient zu produzieren. Umweltschädliche Einsatzstoffe müssen durch ökologisch verträgliche ersetzt werden. Der Verbrauch fossiler und anorganischer Rohstoffe muss reduziert werden. Schadstoffe dürfen nicht weiter ungehindert in die Umwelt gelangen. Und wo das unvermeidlich ist, muss ihr Schicksal kontrollierbar sein.

Neue Verfahren der Umwelt- und Biotechnologie werden bei der Suche nach Lösungen eine Schlüsselrolle spielen. Bereits 2012 lag das weltweite Marktvolumen für Umwelt- und Effizienztechnologien bei etwa zwei Billionen Euro. Schätzungen des Bundesumweltministeriums zufolge wird es sich bis 2022 mehr als verdoppeln.
Fragestellungen
Wie können erneuerbare Ressourcen der Natur zu Energieträgern oder Chemikalien gewandelt werden? Welche Fähigkeiten stecken in Mikroorganismen, Stoffe in Energie oder Chemikalien umzuwandeln? Wie finden wir heraus, welche Mikroorganismen was können? Wie gelingt es, erfolgversprechende Laborergebnisse in industrielle Maßstäbe umzusetzen? Sind neue Umwelt- und Effizienztechnologien tatsächlich ökologisch und effizient? Wie lassen sich unerwünschte Nebenprodukte und Nebenwirkungen minimieren? Können wir die Reinigungskräfte der Natur stärken oder in technischen Anlagen optimieren?
Die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler des Themenbereichs „Umwelt- und Biotechnologie“ arbeiten an Verfahren und Technologien, mit denen Plattformchemikalien und Energieträger dezentral aus erneuerbaren Rohstoffen hergestellt sowie Schadstoffe in natürlichen und technischen Ökosystemen unschädlich gemacht werden können. Damit verfolgen sie das Ziel, Stoffkreisläufe zu schließen und unerwünschte Nebenprodukte zu vermeiden oder zu behandeln. Sie setzen dabei auf die mikrobiologischen und biochemischen Fähigkeiten der Natur, sogenannte „nature-based solutions“.
Sie nutzen nachwachsende Kohlenstoffquellen, non - food - Biomasse, Kohlendioxid, Wasserstoff, Licht- und elektrische Energie und verknüpfen Syntheseprozesse geschickt mit Nutzungskonzepten für Abfälle, Energie und (Ab)Wasser. Voraussetzung dafür sind detaillierte Kenntnisse darüber, welche mikrobiellen Prozesse welchen Stoffumwandlungen zugrunde liegen und wie jenseits der Grenzen der Biologie chemische und physikalische Methoden eingesetzt werden können. Um biotechnologische Produktionsverfahren und -prozesse industrietauglich zu machen, müssen Wege gefunden werden, sie effizienter und flexibler zu gestalten.
Mit dem Mitteldeutschen Katalysezentrum MIKAT entsteht ein strategisches Netzwerk für Bioverfahrenstechnik, Photoreaktoren und alternative Rohstoffe.
Im Rahmen von Projekten und Fallbeispielen entwickeln die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler einzigartige Lösungsansätze, beispielsweise ein integriertes technologisches Konzept, mit dem Wasser mittels bioartifizieller Photosynthese und natürlicher Katalysatoren gespalten und der entstehende Wasserstoff genutzt wird, Einfamilienhäuser dezentral und energetisch autark zu versorgen. Andere Energieträger wie Biogas oder Strom sowie Plattformchemikalien sollen auf der Basis mikrobiologischer und elektrobiokatalytischer Prozesse hergestellt werden.
Beim Abbau von Schadstoffen in technischen und natürlichen Systemen setzen die Forscherinnen und Forscher vor allem auf natürliche mikrobiologische oder pflanzenbasierte Verfahren, die – wenn notwendig – physikalisch-chemisch unterstützt werden können.
Auch bei der Gewinnung von mineralischen Rohstoffen und Wertstoffen wie Metallen, Seltenen Erden oder organischen Säuren aus Abfallströmen oder ungenutzten mineralischen Quellen sind es biotechnologische Konzepte, von denen sich Forschung und Industrie die besten Ökobilanzen versprechen. Wie ökologisch, marktfähig und wertschöpfend diese Verfahren und Konzepte tatsächlich sind, wird ebenfalls analysiert und bewertet.
Für diesen integrierten Forschungsansatz, der vom Prozessverständnis bis zum Technologietransfer reicht und auch sozio-ökonomische sowie umweltrechtliche Fragestellungen beinhaltet, stehen am UFZ eine umfassende Expertise aus allen Themenbereichen und modernste Infrastrukturen zur Verfügung: ein Umwelt- und Biotechnikum für die Skalierung vom Labor- in den technischen Maßstab, Omics-Plattformen für molekulare Analysen, das Hightech-Labor ProVIS für die Visualisierung von mikrobiologisch-biochemischen Prozessen auf zellulärer Ebene, Hochleistungsrechner zur Modellierung und Visualisierung komplexer Umweltprozesse, systembiologische Analysemethoden sowie Forschungs- und Demonstrationsstandorte für die dezentrale Abwasserbehandlung im In- und Ausland.
Der Themenbereich „Umwelt- und Biotechnologie“ nimmt eine zentrale Rolle in der an nachhaltigen Technologien interessierten Wissenschaft ein, etwa über die Ausrichtung internationaler Konferenzen und Workshops. Er ist gleichzeitig mit Partnern aus Industrie sowie kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen eng vernetzt.
Mit dem vom UFZ initiierten Mitteldeutschen Katalysezentrum MIKAT (www.mikat.info) entsteht ein wichtiges strategisches Netzwerk für Bioverfahrenstechnik, Photoreaktoren und alternative Rohstoffe. Darüber hinaus bestehen enge Partnerschaften zur Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie DECHEMA, zum Umweltbundesamt UBA, zum Deutschen Biomasseforschungszentrum DBFZ sowie zu Experten auf europäischer Ebene.
Die frühe Einbindung von Industriepartnern in Forschungs- und Demonstrationsprojekte und die kontinuierliche Rückkopplung zu Verbänden und Behörden sichert nicht nur den Transfer von Wissen und die Einhaltung von Ordnungsrahmen und Regelwerken, sondern erhöht auch die Chancen, das Konzepte und Verfahren in Industrie und Praxis implementiert werden. So ist es beispielsweise gelungen, in Jordanien, einer der wasserärmsten Regionen der Welt, auf Basis einer jahrelangen vertrauensvollen Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik vor Ort ein integriertes Wassermanagement aufzubauen, dessen Kern biotechnologische Verfahren zur Abwasseraufbereitung und damit zum Grundwasserschutz sind.
