The Isotope Lab was established in 1992 as a part of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, headed by Dr. Matthias Gehre. Since 2005 it is integrated in the Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry .
The laboratory is exceptionally equipped with 5 Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers (IRMS) instruments with several different interfaces. Well developed methods are established for routine analyses of stable isotopes (2H, 13C, 15N) in different matrixes.
The main focus of application is the investigation of the fate of organic chemicals in the environment, including assessment of in situ (bio)-degradation, elucidation of transformation pathways and forensic studies.
New technological and methodological developments for online stable isotope analysis of organic compounds are the core focus of our research. The Isotope Lab is expert in standardization and quality assurance strategies for stable isotope analysis and participates in several international projects.
