Increasing exposure to global climate change and hopes for the era of climate adaptation: An aquatic perspective
Water for humans and nature. Illustration by Judith Rinke

Traditional water management needs an update towards developing and implementing new adaptation strategies that mitigate negative impacts of climate change, make freshwater ecosystems more resilient, and secure human use. Climate adaptation of our inland waters require process knowledge and reliable predictions as scientific basis, robust water management strategies, adjusted infrastructures for new engineering strategies, as well as societal integration and wise decision-making for sustainable socioeconomic welfare. In the ideal case, human water uses for water supply, food production, recreation, and the corresponding infrastructures do not harm biodiversity, self-purification, and ecosystem health. Whether this becomes real or remains an unrealised utopia will be one of the key challenges of our century.

How efficient are pre-dams as reservoir guardians? A long-term study on nutrient retention - Graphical abstract

Pre-dams - small reservoirs at inflow points - play an important role in protecting downstream lakes by retaining nutrients. Long-term monitoring of nine German pre-dams shows they are particularly effective at retaining phosphorus (around 40-44 %), while nitrate and silica retention is much lower (around 15 %). Retention is higher in warm seasons due to increased algal uptake and sedimentation, and longer hydraulic residence times improve efficiency. Overall, pre-dams are a practical measure for reducing nutrient loads, including from diffuse sources.

The radiocarbon signal of respired carbon in stream DOC decomposition experiments
The radiocarbon signal of respired carbon in stream DOC decomposition experiments

Rivers recycle organic carbon (OC) rapidly, contributing significantly to CO2 emissions, but it remains unclear which compounds are most readily decomposed. Laboratory experiments show that microorganisms respire a narrow range of DOC ages, regardless of the overall age of stream or soil-derived DOC, suggesting that chemical properties, rather than age alone, limit decomposition. Analysis of previous studies indicates that while some older OC is decomposed, there is no consistent preference for younger or older material due to factors like the freshwater reservoir effect. Overall, intrinsic chemical quality and microbial strategies jointly determine which DOC compounds are utilized.
