Abstract

The traditional Magdeburg Seminars on Water Protection as binational Czech–German meetings increasingly appeared as too limited to face future problems of river catchments and their management on European level. By enlarging the scope of thematic topics and participating countries, especially for EU-candidates and new member countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the future scientific needs in the field of water protection and management of river basins were better served with the 11th Magdeburg Seminar, held in Leipzig in October 2004 on Waters in Central and Eastern Europe: Assessment, Protection, Management.

A central topic was the scope of the EU-Water Framework Directive for rivers and catchment systems, inlcuding effects of land use on water quality, socio-economic issues, conflicts, changes of land use, water management, mining activities and impacts on water bodies, interactions between ground and surface waters, the chemical and the ecological status of waters in Europe.

Another important issue was the problem of floodings and high waters as permanent issue of concern, including flood risk, flood protection, impacts of floodings, changes of land use, and water management (e.g. reservoirs and retention areas).

This actual issue of LIMNOLOGICA presents 13 contributions, that were selected from a total of 154 lectures and posters presented during the seminar in Leipzig. Three papers refer to the hydrology of river systems and floodings, including the erosion effects of high water. Seven papers are dealing with water quality affected by agriculture, drainage, and mining on both coal and metals. Three papers are addressing land use and management of river catchment areas, lastly including cost-benefit relations in terms of monetary items. The resulting procedures are formalised in a decision support system enabling the comparison of various simulated options of future actions. The here-presented selection of 13 articles is covering an unusually broad thematic scope that has to be seen as the given framework of actual limnological research.

We—authors and editors—gratefully acknowledge the work and the recommendations of 60 peer reviewers who were willing to read and to critically assess 30 manuscripts that have been submitted for this special issue of LIMNOLOGICA.
