Measuring and modelling of soil functions

Soils are complex systems in which a multitude of physical, chemical and biological processes interact at different spatial levels. These interactions result in the diverse functions that soils fulfill within terrestrial ecosystems. In addition to being the basis for plant growth and agricultural production, soils are reactors in the global nutrient cycle, they store and filter water, are the habitat for an enormous biodiversity and store large amounts of carbon.

We develop concepts for measuring and modeling these soil functions and the underlying processes. Models for describing the dynamics of soil functions in response to management measures or climatic changes must depict the relevant soil processes and their interactions. Key components here are water and gas flows, but also biological activity and the associated turnover of organic matter.

The research findings are incorporated into the development of the systemic model  BODIUM , which simulates the complex soil processes and their interactions and thus reproduces the complex behavior of the soil as realistically as possible. This creates the scientific basis for predicting changes in soil functions as a result of climate and land use change.
