Mikrobiologie anaerober Systeme
Zu den anaeroben Mikroorganismen gehören die ältesten Lebensformen und die vielfältigsten Stoffwechseltypen, die jemals in der Evolution entstanden sind, beispielsweise die verschiedenen respirativen und fermentativen Formen der Energiekonservierung, Mechanismen der Kohlenstofffixierung oder die syntrophen Abbauwege, die Leben am Rande des thermodynamischen Limits ermöglichen. Anaerobe mikrobielle Konsortien sind essentiell für globale Stoffkreisläufe, die Mineralisierung organischer Schadstoffe in anoxischen Umweltsystemen und für viele biotechnologische Prozesse wie die Abwasserreinigung und die Konversion von organischen Reststoffen oder auch CO2 zu biobasierten Wertstoffen und Energieträgern.
Die AG Mikrobiologie Anaerober Systeme (MicAS) erforscht die Ökologie und Physiologie anaerober mikrobieller Gemeinschaften in natürlichen und technischen Ökosystemen mit dem Ziel, die Stoffwechselaktivitäten anaerober Mikroorganismen für biotechnologische Anwendungen zu nutzen sowie die ökophysiologische Rolle bisher nicht kultivierter Organismen und ihre Bedeutung für Ökosystemfunktionen aufzuklären.
In technischen Systemen wie anaeroben Bioreaktoren entwickeln wir Strategien zur Prozessoptimierung. Ziele sind, mikrobielle Parameter zur Prozesssteuerung zu identifizieren sowie neue Stoffströme und mikrobielle Ressourcen für die Produktion von Wertstoffen und Energieträgern aus erneuerbaren Ressourcen zu erschließen.
In Umweltsystemen untersuchen wir die Rolle anaerober Mikroorganismen in biogeochemischen Kreisläufen und beim Abbau organischer Schadstoffe.
