Forschungsinteressen

Ziel der Arbeiten sind systematische Stoff- und Energieflussanalysen im anaeroben Vergärungsprozess zur Produktion von Carboxylat-Plattformchemikalien (vor allem mittelkettige und iso-Fettsäuren) oder Methan. Es sollen Hinweise auf unter bestimmten Bedingungen (Substrat, Reaktorfahrweise) bevorzugte oder kritische Stoffflüsse im System geliefert werden. Damit sollen Indikatoren für stabile bzw. instabile Zustände im Prozess identifiziert werden, was wiederum zu Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der jeweiligen Produktionsprozesse hinsichtlich Ausbeute und Stabilität führen soll.

Im Fokus stehen neben Rührkesselreaktoren vor allem Feststoffvergärungssysteme mit Perkolation mit verschiedenen Substraten (Nawaros und Reststoffen) in Batch- und semi-kontinuierlichen Verfahren. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Department Biochemische Konversion des DBFZ werden die oben genannten Systeme betrieben und analysiert, wobei auch molekularbiologische Methoden (v.a. T-RFLP, Amplikon-Sequenzierung) zum Einsatz kommen. Die Prozessparameter werden mit den mikrobiologischen Informationen korreliert um metabolische Zusammenhänge sichtbar zu machen.

In den letzten Jahren wurde das CAPRAFERM®-Verfahren entwickelt. Dabei handelt es sich um ein anaerobes Fermentationsverfahren, bei dem Capron- und Caprylsäure aus komplexer Biomasse (z.B. Pflanzen, Abfälle) gebildet werden kann. In verschiedenen Projekten wird in Kooperation mit dem DBFZ, anderen akademischen und Industriepartnern das Verfahren im Sinne einer Bioraffinerie weiterentwickelt und die Chemikalien in Endprodukten getestet. Zudem wird untersucht, wie bestehende Biogasanlagen so umgebaut werden können, dass neben Biogas auch Carbonsäuren produziert und vermarktet werden können.
