Abstract The livestock manure and residual sludge are major reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important treatment and disposal method for the livestock manure and residual sludge, which attenuates ARGs and helps reduce environmental pollution and ecological risks. Therefore understanding ARGs’ fate and transmission risk during AD has become an important research topic. In this chapter, we review and discuss the fate of extracellular ARGs and intracellular ARGs in AD, and provide a comprehensive overview of the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the changes of ARGs in AD for the future risk management of environmental ARGs.
