Umweltmykologie
Forschungsthemen
Pilze besiedeln unterschiedliche, unglaublich vielfältige Lebensräume unseres Planeten. Viele von ihnen sind potente primäre Zersetzer von komplexen organischen Makromolekülen wie z.B. Lignozellulose und damit wichtige Akteure unterschiedlicher Ökosysteme, mit unverzichtbaren Funktionen für Nahrungsnetze und den globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf. Gleichzeitig können viele Pilze organische Umweltschadstoffe in weniger oder gar nicht mehr schädliche Verbindungen umwandeln. Bestimmte am Lignozellulose-Aufschluss beteiligte Gruppen von Enzymen (z.B. extrazelluläre Lignin-modifizierende Enzyme, aber auch intrazelluläre Cytochrom P450-Systeme) sind ebenfalls an der Biotransformation von organischen Umweltschadstoffen beteiligt. Derartige biokatalytische Fähigkeiten machen Pilze und deren Enzyme äußerst attraktiv für unterschiedliche (umwelt)biotechnologische Anwendungen (z.B. für die Abwasserbehandlung oder in Bioraffinerien).
In unserer Arbeitsgruppe versuchen wir, Abbaupotentiale von Pilzen mit unterschiedlichen Anpassungen an diverse terrestrische oder aquatische Lebensräume zu erkennen, die zugrundeliegenden Wirkprinzipien und Mechanismen zu verstehen und sie solchen potenziellen Anwendungen zugänglich zu machen, für die sie besonders geeignet erscheinen.
Im Hinblick auf synthetische, die Umwelt belastende organische Verbindungen konzentrieren sich unsere Arbeiten gegenwärtig auf synthetische Polymere (Kunststoffe), Kunststoff-Additive (z.B. Phthalsäureester) sowie weitere Spurenschadstoffe.
Ein zweiter Forschungsschwerpunkt beruht auf der Fähigkeit von Pilzen zur Nutzung Lignozellulose-basierter natürlicher Substrate und adressiert die Valorisierung landwirtschaftlicher Ab- oder Nebenprodukte im Sinne einer nachhaltigen Bioökonomie.
