Stefan Saretz

Stefan started his work at the UFZ in the Department for cell toxicology in October 2024. He is part of the CoModHaz project, which aims to modernize chemical risk assessment. In this, he is mainly responsible for developing of the analytics of the project specific highly hydrophobic compounds as well as for further elucidating the underlying physicochemical and kinetic processes and parameters.

Previous to his work at UFZ, Stefan worked in several positions as medicinal chemist. First, in the group of Mirko Buchholz from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immology (IZI) in Halle (Saale) and in the group from Prof. Mark Brönstrup at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Braunschweig. At both position his focus was the design and the synthesis of new antibiotic and antiviral drug candidates. Later, he joined the newly found Mannin GmbH, a pharma start-up in the Leipzig region. There he not just designed and synthesized drug candidates but also helped to establish the general lab infrastructure and analytics.

Stefan holds a PhD in Chemistry, which he gained in the group of Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins. His PhD topic was in field of carbaboranes for a selective boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) as a new approach for cancer therapy. His PhD was part of wider project between university and industry, which resulted in several patents.
