Sophia Bardehly

Sophia Bardehly (born Mälzer) has been working in the Department of Cell Toxicology since April 2018. After several years as student assistant, Sophia has stated as a research assistant in January 2024. She is involved in various projects including the exposure assessment in cell-based bioassays as well as the development of S9 alternatives as part of the CRACK IT Challenge project „Establishing in vitro OECD test guideline assays (TG487 and TG455) free from animal-derived products”.

Sophia studied Pharmacy at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. From October 2022 to May 2023, she worked on her diploma thesis entitled "High-throughput exposure assessment in cell-based in vitro bioassays " at the Institute of Pharmacy AG Medicinal Chemistry in cooperation with the UFZ Department of Cell Toxicology. Part of the work was the development of a high-throughput method for determining the freely dissolved concentration in in vitro bioassays. After finishing the 3rd state examination, she received her pharmaceutical license (Approbation) in December 2023.

Team News

Welcome to our new PhD student Yuxin Liu in the QTOX project. Yuxin started with the QTOX annual meeting in Valencia where she (second from left) and other QTOX doctoral candidates inspected the mesocosms for our joint QTOX mesocosm study in 2026. Yuxin’s project will deal with quantitative in vitro to vivo extrapolations from cells to fish.

New partnership

On 10 October 2024 we kicked off the project "Developing high-throughput experimental and computational tools for safe-by-design chemicals – Proof of principle for antioxidants”- a collaboration between Eawag, ETH Zürich, University of Zurich and UFZ funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Kathrin Fenner. We welcome Bernadette Mederer into the Zelltox team as the UFZ PhD student in this project. More info on Link

Poster Presentation

We welcome Haotian Wang from Beijing for a two-year postdoc sponsored by the Humboldt foundation. Haotian gave a poster presentation about his project at the Humboldt Network Meeting in Magdeburg from 24 to 26 April. In his project at UFZ, he will identify neurotoxic chemicals in the aquatic environment by integrating data science with impact-oriented analysis using high-throughput bioanalytical tools.
