Elena Hommel

Elena has been working in the Department of Cell Toxicology since August 2023. She began her academic journey with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Chemistry and Conservation Biology at the University of Koblenz-Landau, where she also worked as a student assistant in ecosystem analysis and aquatic ecological ecotoxicology. She continued her studies in the Environmental Chemistry Master's program at the University of Bayreuth, including an Erasmus exchange at Stockholm University in Sweden. For her Master's thesis, she conducted a toxicological analysis of the Elbe River using high-throughput in-vitro bioassays at the UFZ in the cell toxicology department.

Elena's research focuses on understanding how complex chemical mixtures impact environmental and human health. Despite the known presence of numerous chemicals in the environment, their exact prevalence and effects remain largely unknown. Her goal is to advance the assessment of these mixtures using high-throughput bioassays, chemical analytics and human biomonitoring to contribute to a healthier, non-toxic environment.

Currently pursuing her Ph.D., Elena is working in the ENDOMIX project, which aims to uncover the health impacts of chemical mixtures on the immune system, particularly their effects on endocrine disruption and immunomodulation. Therefore, she will develop high-throughput in vitro bioassays to identify immune effect drivers in chemicals mixtures. Additionally, blood and placenta samples will be screened to detect and quantify newly identified mixture components, leading to the deduction of biomarkers of exposure.
