Campus "Wissenschaftspark"
Campus "Wissenschaftspark Leipzig" - a prototype for Blue-Green-Red Infrastructures (BGRI)
Project title:
The Campus project consists of various initiatives:
- BGRI@UFZ: infrastructure development at UFZ campus
- SolutionLab URBAN-LE: Systemic Blue-Green-Red Urban Development for Climate-Resilient Cities
- PoF V: Blue-Green-Red concepts are part of the new topic H Urban Transformation
Project description:
The UFZ's blue-green infrastructure, which includes research green roofs and façades as well as tree infiltration trenches on the UFZ campus and at partner sites in Leipzig, facilitates interdisciplinary research into optimising urban greenery. The focus of this research is particularly on rainwater management, microclimate regulation, urban biodiversity and the function of these areas as pollutant sinks. KIT and UFZ are jointly monitoring and managing several urban trees on their campuses to better assess the impact of irrigation on cooling and biodiversity functions. The UFZ's blue-green infrastructure consists of a shallow geothermal test field where relevant subsurface parameters have been measured using direct-push, thermal response and fibre optic technologies. A unique experimental aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) pilot site incorporating groundwater remediation technologies has been established as a core part of the KONATES project (funded by the BMBF) and corresponding digital twin concepts have been developed for data integration and ATES optimisation. Combining the existing infrastructures to create a blue-green-read infrastructure is the next step in UFZ's efforts to develop a CO2-neutral campus.
