Characterizing hydrograph recessions from satellite-derived soil moisture

Basso, S., Ghazanchaei, Z., Tarasova, L., Science of the Total Environment (2021)

STOTEN_cathyd_website

The influence of soil moisture on recession hydrograph is investigated and the potential of satellite products to shed light on hydrological features examined. In particular, a satellite-derived Soil Water Index allows for ranking river flows according to their variability, thus informing knowledge of the hydrologic response. Drier river basins with more variable wetness conditions exhibit larger recession coefficients.

The Flood Cooking Book: Ingredients and regional flavors of floods across Germany

Merz, R., Tarasova, L., Basso, S. Environmental Research Letters (2020)

ERL_cathyd_website
We used machine learning techniques to pinpoint spatio-temporal features of precipitation and catchment wetness states which led to floods among 177 267 rainfall-runoff events observed in 373 German river basins. The identified ingredients and regional flavors shed new light on the spatial dynamics of hydro-meteorological processes leading to floods and foster regional adaptation of flood management strategies and early warning systems.

Water-energy-ecosystem nexus in small run-of-river hydropower: optimal design and policy

Basso, S., Lazzaro, G., Bovo, M., Soulsby, C., Botter, G., Applied Energy (2020)

STOTEN_cathyd_website

Analytic tools for multi-objective design of run-of-river power plants are proposed. These allows for jointly maximizing the economic profitability of power plants and the river connectivity for biological populations. Two distinct profitable and ecologically effective design strategies emerge. The optimal strategy depends on local hydrology and target ecosystem services.
