Research

My doctoral research focuses on the investigation and characterization of cobalamin-dependent methyltransferase II (MTase II) enzymes, which catalyze the transfer of methyl groups from methylated corrinoid cofactors to various acceptor molecules. Within the context of the CoMet project, I aim to optimize the heterologous expression, followed by purification and characterization of these enzymes. To uncover the molecular basis of substrate binding and the catalytic activity, structural and biochemical studies of different recombinant MTases II will be carried out.
Utilizing MTase II enzymes could overcome the reliance on harsh reagents in classical methylation chemistry and contribute to the development of sustainable and circular methylation pathways.
