Macronutrient stoichiometry at landscape level

I investigate the large-scale patterns of carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus ratios as key stoichiometric drivers of nitrogen and phosphorus retention, and their effects on the state of stream, river and lake ecosystems.

Here, the eutrophication of shallow lakes is centrally controlled by nitrogen and phosphorus, whereby the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus is decisive for the respective limiting nutrient. It is therefore crucial to know whether the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus or even the concentration of both nutrients has a limiting effect on algae growth, i.e. the eutrophication of shallow lakes.

The effect of these macronutrients depends not only on their concentration and ratio, but also on the molecular composition of the macronutrients. This is because there are less biologically reactive molecular forms, but also highly reactive molecular forms. It is therefore a central part of my research to link the molecular form and reactivity of macronutrients with their ratios.

I combine catchment research and ecosystem research in streams and lakes aiming at macronutrient management at the landscape level. Here, source and pathway dependent effects on macronutrient inputs must be understood and linked to their effects on inland water ecosystems.
