Fields of Competence

Determination of activity concentrations of natural and man-made radionuclides in the environment; Use of these radionuclides as environmental traces for the investigation of environmentally relevant processes

  • Use of radon (222Rn) that is naturally occurring in groundwater as tracer for the investigation of groundwater migration processes
  • Use of radium (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, 228Ra) and radon (222Rn) isotopes that are naturally occurring in groundwater and surface waters as tracers for the investigation of groundwater / surface water interaction and related processes
  • Using naturally occurring radioactive sulphur (35SO42-) and sodium (22Na) as indicators for the dating of young groundwater (currently method setup)
  • Use of radon (222Rn) that is naturally occurring in soil gas and groundwater as partitioning tracer for the localization and quantitative assessment of residual NAPL-contamination of soils and aquifers
  • Development of innovative field approaches for the on-site detection of radon concentrations (222Rn) in groundwater and surface waters (incl. development of related mobile detection devices)
  • Use of disequilibria between activity concentrations of radionuclides of the natural decay chains as indicators for the investigation of environmentally relevant processes (e.g. 238U, 226Ra, 210Pb)
  • Use of natural and man-made radionuclides (210Pbex and 137Cs) as indicators for the dating sediment of lake sediments

Localization, investigation and assessment of elevated natural activity concentrations in (fossil) groundwater as contribution for sustainable water resource management in arid climate zones

  • Use of radon (222Rn) that is naturally occurring in (fossil) groundwater as indicator for elevated natural activity concentrations in large sandstone aquifers (with focus on fossil groundwater resources in arid und semi-arid climate zones)
  • Investigation and assessment of large aquifer domains that are characterized by elevated natural activity concentrations applying on-site methods that use radon (222Rn), short-lifed radium nuclides (223Ra, 224Ra) as well as easily detectable water parameters as indicators
  • Development of concepts for the sustainable abstraction and smart cost effective remediation of groundwater with elevated natural activity concentrations that are (potentially) to be used for drinking and irrigation purposes (incl. disposal of NORM-waste)
