SEVAMOD2 - Building up science-based management instruments for Lake Sevan, Armenia

Project goals
- Nutrient budget for Lake Sevan and nutrient management concept
- Coupled physical-ecological 1D eutrophication model for Lake Sevan (nutrients, plankton, oxygen)
- Use of satellite-based remote sensing for estimation of water quality of Lake Sevan
- Evaluation of alternative management scenarios and identification of major water quality threats for Lake Sevan including the preparation of a policy brief
- Capacity Building in Armenia for use of satellite remote sensing and lake modelling
- Publication of the project results including realization of a final public project workshop in 2023
One of the core activities to reach the goals is the operation of a monthly sampling of Lake Sevan at the deepest sites of Small Sevan and Big Sevan at different depths. The taken water samples are analysed chemically and for both phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Project components
- Collection and evaluation of available data (limnological, hydrological, meteorological, use and management) on Lake Sevan, its tributaries and its catchment resulting from monitoring and research in the past
- Continuous temperature measurements at different depths
- Monthly chemical monitoring of Lake Sevan (December 2017 to December 2018) at deepest sites of Small Sevan and Big Sevan
- Geochemical investigation of the sediment of Lake Sevan with focus on phosphorus and its behaviour
- Evaluation of aquaculture in Lake Sevan
- Development of a 1D hydrodynamic model of Lake Sevan
- Edition of a special issue of an international scientific journal presenting recent and actual results of research
