Urban gardening project at the UFZ Leipzig nominated in the 2024 planting competition
The "Feierabendgarten" project initiated by the secretary of the Department of Hydrogeology was awarded a recognition prize in the company gardens category of the nationwide planting competition organized by the Stiftung für Mensch und Umwelt (Foundation for People and the Environment). The project comprises five raised beds at the Leipzig site, which have been available to employees since summer 2024 and are intended to support biodiversity. After years of drought in Germany: What are the current groundwater levels?
"In the summer of 2023, farmers had to fear for their harvest. [...] There was a groundwater drought in many places in Germany. The water level had been falling since 2018.[...] The water situation has normalized overall. Will it stay that way when the summer gets dry again? Can gardeners and farmers breathe a sigh of relief?"
