Tenure Track Process
Tenure track positions are derived from the UFZ scientific strategy and thematic priorities and are advertised internationally.
The announcements clearly lay out the profile of the positions, the expectations on the candidates and their tasks, the evaluation criteria, as well as the support and development opportunities during the tenure track phase.
The positions are filled according to quality standards for personnel selection, strengthening fair competition, diversity, and inclusion. The UFZ also applies qualitative, impact-oriented standards for assessing academic performance, while taking into account candidates’ individual backgrounds - such as academic age and career stage.
Tenure track starts with a fixed-term contract of up to six years, including structured onboarding, a transparent target agreement, and regular feedback meetings.
Tenure track scientists receive mentoring, professional networking support, and opportunities to build visibility, independence, and collaboration across and beyond the UFZ and the international scientific community.
A mid-term evaluation halfway through provides guidance and may adjust goals and support.
The process includes a mid-term evaluation and a final evaluation about one year before the end of the tenure track.
The final evaluation considers performance against the agreed criteria and future development prospects, drawing on a short self-report, external expertise, a UFZ public expert talk, and a career discussion with the tenure commission.
A positive final evaluation leads to an offer of a permanent contract providing a reliable path to a long-term scientific career at the UFZ. If the outcome is negative, the UFZ provides support for alternative career paths.
