My current research investigates the influence of alternative reforestation scenarios on carbon and nutrient exports from forest sites after forest diebacks in the central-german Harz region. I particularly focus on the question how different forest communities influence carbon and nutrient exports via tree species composition and forest growth dynamics, especially after disturbance events. Within this context I am currently developing a coupled forest - soil model system which can on the one hand simulate forest developments of different forest types and can on the other hand also simulate biogeochemical flows in forest soils. In order to achieve this I would like to combine the individual-based forest growth model FORMIND and the microbially-explicit Jena Soil Model via an innovative coupling approach.
