The EMAS environmental management system at the UFZ
The UFZ is one of the world’s leading research centers in the field of environmental research. It demonstrates ways in which a sustainable use of our natural resource base is possible for the benefit of both humankind and the environment. To achieve a balance between ecological integrity and socio-economic needs, our research aims to effectively tackle multifaceted environmental challenges by addressing whole systems and overarching goals.
But research activities have also negative environmental impacts, such as the consumption of resources, the usage of energy as well as the generation of emissions. In its environmental guidelines, the UFZ undertakes to act in accordance with the principles of sustainable development of our society not only in research, but also to implement this in operational processes. Based on the European Union's demanding institutionalized environmental management system EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), we address the need for ecological sustainability, reduce negative environmental impacts and achieve continuous improvements by various measures.
With the help of our systematic environmental management system, which has been institutionalized since 2004 as first and so far only Helmholtz center to be externally EMAS validated every year, the UFZ undergoes a structured improvement process that is repeated annually. Measures are systematically identified and implemented annually on the basis of key figures, regular internal and external recertification audits as well as employee participation. This includes constantly improving the environmental performance of our center and minimizing negative environmental impacts, promoting a pronounced transfer of knowledge and technology, taking appropriate account of the interests of employees and other stakeholders.

Details on the components of the environmental management system can be found in Chapter 2 "Environmental management at the UFZ" of the environmental statement, which is prepared in detail every three years. In the years in between, a shorter version with updates is produced.
Environmental Statement 2022
Due to our research mission we do feel obliged to act as a role model for sustainable actions beyond the boundaries of the Helmholtz Association as well. Although there are undeniable achievements, continuous improvement is necessary, motivated by the responsibility to contribute to the transformation towards a sustainable society. Externally certified progress and transparent communication are part of it for us.
Annual environmental sustainability reports (environmental statements) of the UFZ
Based on the integrative approach of our research and in consideration that ecological aspects are interconnected, our sustainability actions pursue a systematic approach. We define our actions towards ecological sustainability on the basis of seven, interconnected aims:

Three integrative examples illustrate the connection between these aims:
