Step 11: Dissemination of findings
Dissemination of project outcomes and results from citizen science projects is a key factor in presenting and making the results available to a wide range of stakeholders. Scientific texts, peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations serve as traditional dissemination channels and ensure credible publication within the scientific community.
Digital platforms such as project websites, blogs and various social media can significantly increase the accessibility of results. Approaches or key results can be integrated into educational work through co-operation with educational institutions such as schools. Local public events in particular, but also work-shops and exhibitions, promote engagement and awareness within the community. In addition, partner-ships with policy makers and stakeholders facilitate evidence-based decision making and thus increase social acceptance.
To support local communication channels, the following measures will be taken: (1) press kits for local news outlets; (2) presentations or information materials for local citizen-led organisations; (3) use of local organisations or institutions that focus on science communication, or e.g. science / climate museums.
Citizen science projects can develop targeted and effective dissemination strategies that maximise the reach, engagement and impact of their results among different stakeholder groups by addressing the following questions at the planning stage.
Following questions need to be answered:
- Who are the key target stakeholder group for your findings?
- What are the key messages and key findings that need to be communicated?
- What are the communication preferences and habits of the target stakeholder group?
- How can your project results be communicated in an accessible and understandable way taking into account the different backgrounds and knowledge levels of the different stakeholder groups?
- Are there opportunities for interactive or participatory dissemination methods?
- What are the ethical considerations such as data protection, consent, and cultural sensitivities in relation to dissemination?
- How can partnerships and collaborations with relevant organizations, institutions, or community groups can enhance your dissemination efforts?
- What kind of resources are available for your dissemination activities?
- Do you have measures in place to evaluate the effectiveness of your dissemination efforts?
- How can your project results be integrated into wider communication and outreach initiatives?
