Constructed wetlands

Duration: 2007-2013

Funding: SAnierungs-Forschung In Regional kontaminierten Aquiferen (SAFIRA II)

Constructed Wetlands are an ecologically and economically interesting alternative for the remediation of contaminated waters. However, looking at contaminated sites or constructed wetlands, emissions of volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants from the vadose zone and through transpiration by plants into the atmosphere are still insufficiently described.

In order to monitor pollutant volatilization, an analytical procedure was developed and implemented that includes special emission hoods. Aside from that, we work on the development of analytical techniques for the detection of VOCs in plant material and research the uptake and metabolisation of volatile and semi-volatile contaminants by plants. We also investigate possibilities for monitoring water bodies online.
