Abstract

The bioeconomy and the energy transformation both demand renewable raw materials. Due to the valuable properties of biomass, it has the potential to transform a wide range of applications. Biomass is expected as a relevant resource for hard to abate energy sectors, providing flexibility and generating negative emissions. In addition, it is required for the defosssilization in various bioeconomy sectors such as the chemical industry and the construction sector. This study focuses on how the consideration of material uses affects the cost optimal solution of energetic biomass use in the energy system optimization model BENOPT-DE. Through a detailed representation of biomass potentials, prices and conversion technologies within the model, robust future bioenergy options could be identified over 8 scenarios. The results deliver valuable insights for policymakers and relevant stakeholders for the future cost-optimal use of biomass.
