Calorimetry Competence Centre (C3)

The Calorimetry Competence Centre (C3) combines long-standing expertise in calorimetry of environmental and biological processes and biomolecules with thermodynamic and thermokinetic modeling.

We serve as a partner for addressing energetic questions in complex ecological systems, bioreaction platforms, monitoring systems, biocatalysts, whole cells, and enzymes. A key focus is the development and integration of innovative measurement concepts, including calorespirometry, the coupling of photonic or bioelectrical systems with calorimetry, and methods for early detection of microbial contamination in water, food, and environmental samples.

Our analytical approaches enable cross-scale investigations—from the molecular level to entire ecosystems—and are applied, among others, to:

  • Matter and energy balances in soils to predict carbon fixation and detoxification processes
  • Sustainable valorization of technical and natural polymers
  • Improving the predictive power of systems biology for biocatalyst design
  • Early detection of pathogenic contamination
  • Real-time quantification of photosynthetic and electrobiotechnological efficiencies
