This session is all about how to get the most out of Career Talks, both for early career scientists as well as PIs. The session will begin with short improv sketches and continue with a panel discussion. Questions that will be addressed are for instance: How can early career scientists and PIs have an honest and rewarding discussion of career plans and prospects? What preparation do you really need? How can you confidently address uncomfortable issues?

My profession: I am a career coach and leadership development facilitator based in Liverpool, supporting researchers and academics in Universities in the UK. For the past 2 years I have been a career coach on the Prosper programme, a new approach to career development that unlocks postdocs’ potential enabling them to thrive in multiple career pathways. Outside academia I work with early career and senior leaders and their teams across a range of business sectors helping them to have more fulfilling professional and personal lives.

When looking for a job outside academia, it is crucial to first examine your own potential, skills and competencies. Questions you should ask yourself beforehand include for instance: What is important when applying for a job in industry, as opposed to a career in academia? How do I translate my academic skills and competencies to the
non-academic job market? What do companies in industry actually look for when recruiting new employees? And as a PI – how can I support my early career scientist and provide meaningful advice?

In an interactive talk with an expert from the field, Natascha Eckert, Global Head of University Relations at Siemens AG, we will address these and more questions. The session is aimed both at early career
scientists and PIs.

  • Workshop 1: Why would anybody hire me?
    Dr. Gaby Schilling

    During your academic career you have focused on a very specialized topic. Unfortunately, that expert knowledge is not mandatory for any of the job ads you come across. You have no relevant experience – nobody outside academia will be interested in you (let alone hire you).

    In this workshop you will learn that the last assumption might be very wrong. You may be surprised how interesting you are and leave with a colorful picture of your signature strengths.

    Choose this workshop if you believe that generally it is a good thing to consider careers other than academia, but you have no good idea what you bring to the “outside” world.

    My profession:

    Gaby is a qualified business and career coach who completed a doctorate in chemistry and a B. Sc. in psychology. For more than 17 years she held various leading positions in an internationally operating DAX 30 company in Germany and the US and thus knows very well which of the skills scientists develop during their academic career are required in industry.


  • Workshop 2: Applications are nothing else but translations!

    Inside scientific communities people evaluate each other based on their publications. But what if potential employers do not know how to read and interpret your publications? Or worse: your potential boss is irritated because he or she wants to engage a self-starter and not a theorist.

    Maybe these bosses are just as lost as you are when reading job ads.

    In this workshop you will learn how to translate your scientific track record into a CV that is not only understood by managers but also convincing. And on the other side you will discover the jobs behind fancy or outlandish titles.

    Choose this workshop if you don't know whether the jobs hiding behind job ads are right for you and if so, how to write to the employer who is matching your needs.

    My profession:

    ...is Human Resources Management. Generally I have to establish instruments and methods to identify employees`potential for further development of personal and technical skills. One of the most important issues is the establishment of effcient recruiting processes to engage and promote young talents. Beside supporting careers we do al lot of retention management enabling our employees a good balance between professional dedication and private life.

    Ask me about finding out where to fit in. Beside this I like to talk about appropriate self presentation, writing CVs and Cover letters, preparing interviews, and how to talk to HR people.


  • Workshop 3: Providing Evidence for the Skills that stay with you 
    Tobias Maier

    Researchers preparing for their next career step inside or outside of academia are often unsure about transferable skills (e.g. leadership skills) and how to provide evidence for these competencies from their own career track. We will use this interactive workshop to raise awareness of the individual skill sets of the participants and will provide a frame how to structure these. Additionally, participants will learn and apply a universal tool how to provide evidence for diverse transferable skills and assertively communicate this.

    Let’s get practical. Here’s a chance to kook at concrete real CVs that are about to be send or were sent to apply for a job outside academia. Possibly you have not yet participated in a workshop like the one offered by Barbara Hoffbauer. Still it may be quite urgent and you need instantaneous feedback.

    Choose this workshop iIf you are ready to share your CV and receive feedback for it. Feedback and suggestions for improvement will be even more to the point, if you also bring the job ad that is the basis for your application.
