Outline

Modern societies nowadays are increasingly faced with new kinds of pollution of waterbodies such as the residue from pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Those contaminants are not or not adequately covered by the traditional chemical-, product- and water-related control system, although in the meantime there are alarming confirmations of environmental effects caused by pharmaceuticals. This problem extends since those "new pollutants" reach drinking water as well, where they are able to bring about harmful effects for the health of vulnerable groups.

The intention of this project is to assess the effectiveness of established environmental risk control systems and to make proposals for its improvement if needed.

The research framework comprises:

  • the relationship of and interaction between different legal systems concerning the control of chemicals, products and waterbodies,
  • legal measures and methods of risk assessment and risk analysis,
  • consideration and non-consideration of vulnerable groups within the risk assessment process,
  • concrete legal control and decision proceedings implementing risk identification, risk assessment and risk management.

Special attention in this context is payed to the current reform of European chemical law, since this reform indicates harmonization and enhancement of the whole European law concerning chemicals and products.

The project is carried out in close collaboration with the project "Biological effects of new pollutants" of the Centre for Environmental Research.
