Lecture Series HEALTHY PLANET
Der Themenbereich Chemikalien in der Umwelt lädt alle Interessierten herzlich zu unserer Lecture Series HEALTHY PLANET ein:
Topic: "Emerging pollutants in water – treatment | prediction | sensors"
Date: Tuesday, February 10, 11 am
Venue: KUBUS Hall 1A
Short abstract:
Micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals represent a growing challenge for water treatment. Although they occur at very low concentrations, they can have significant impacts on the environment and human health. This lecture highlights current strategies for their removal, including advanced oxidation processes, cavitation, membrane technologies, and adsorption-based approaches. In addition, it will be shown how in-silico methods can improve the predictability of chemical degradability and thus foster the development of sustainable substances. Another focus is on sensor technologies that enable continuous, real-time monitoring and thereby provide the basis for adaptive and energy-efficient treatment processes.
The overarching goal is to integrate technical and scientific solutions that support safe water (re-)use.
Short CV:
Prof. Dr. Patrick Bräutigam is a technical environmental chemist specializing in water technology.
He studied chemistry and economics before completing his PhD in technical environmental chemistry.
Since 2024, he is Professor of Technical Environmental Chemistry and Sensor Technology at the University of Stuttgart. His research combines chemical and engineering approaches and focuses on emerging pollutants such as micropollutants and microplastics, as well as advanced processes for wastewater and drinking water purification. With expertise spanning chemistry, process engineering, and artificial intelligence, he works on sustainable technologies to ensure safe water and environmental quality.
Host: Saskia Finckh/ Department Exposure Science
Topic: "Can new approach methods resolve the chemical data gap?"
Date: Tuesday, January 27, 10 am
Venue: KUBUS Hall 1A
Short Abstract:
Chemical production and release exceed the capacity of traditional safety assessment, and new approach methods (NAMs) are required to obtain enough hazard and exposure information for safety decisions. In this presentation, Dr. Paul Friedman will discuss three recently published examples from her portfolio that apply NAMs to chemical safety assessment: rapid development of quantitative values for human health risk assessment, prioritization of chemicals for further endocrine screening using bioactivity:exposure ratios, and the next frontier of modeling the bioactivity of mixtures for screening prioritization. Finally, Dr. Paul Friedman will provide a short background of her current institution, UL Research Institutes’ Chemical Insights, and the capabilities available for potential collaboration.
Short CV:
Dr. Katie Paul Friedman joined UL Research Institutes as a Director to establish the new Center for Chemical Informatics and Screening in Research Triangle Park, NC in September 2025. Previously, Dr. Paul Friedman worked in the Office of Research and Development at the US Environmental Protection Agency, most recently as Director for the Biomolecular and Computational Toxicology Division in the Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure. Her broad computational toxicology research portfolio demonstrates application of new approach methods to chemical safety assessment and building confidence in those methods. Her primary research interests are now focused on the development of toxicity values using multiple approaches and modeling the effects of chemical mixtures. She has worked on in silico and in vitro new approach methods for endocrine, neurodevelopmental, developmental, and systemic toxicity. Dr. Paul Friedman has previously led strategic research initiatives such as the New Chemicals Collaborative Research Program, the ToxCast bioactivity screening program, and Toxicity Reference Database. Dr. Paul Friedman also brings experience as a regulatory toxicologist from her time at Bayer. She has been active in multi-stakeholder projects to develop alternatives and their acceptance, including through technical leadership at federal advisory committees and international research efforts. Her laboratory background includes development of high-throughput screening assays and combined use of in vitro and in vivo approaches to resolve chemical safety challenges. Dr. Paul Friedman received a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has authored > 75 peer-reviewed publications and mentored > 18 early career trainees.
Hosts: Prof. Dr. Tamara Tal (Department of Ecotoxicology) / Prof. Dr. Wibke Busch (Department of Ecotoxicology)
Topic: "Climate Change Research – Coming Together To Explore Mechanisms of Human Health Effects"
Date: Tuesday, January 20, 1 pm
Venue: KUBUS Hall 1A
Short Abstract:
Climate change poses profound risks to human health through rising temperatures, degraded air quality, shifting ecosystems, and altered disease dynamics. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that bridges data science, predictive modeling, environmental exposures, and molecular mechanisms of disease. Air quality challenges and specific environmental exposures that are exacerbated by climate change, include wildfire smoke, ozone, and other complex chemical exposures of gases and particulates. Research is needed to identify the most harmful components, elucidate mechanisms of toxicity, and develop strategies for exposure mitigation and health protection. Approaches to study these environmental challenges include exposure assessment, toxicology, field-based studies, AI, and computational data integration. Using specific air quality challenges as examples illustrate the need for building an interdisciplinary ecosystem to uncover novel mechanisms and find solutions.
Short CV:
After receiving her PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from New York University studying the effects of the air pollutant ozone on respiratory epithelial cells, Ilona Jaspers came to the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill for a postdoctoral training opportunity in the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma, and Lung Biology (CEMALB). Since starting her faculty position at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001 she was continuously funded by NIH, EPA, and DoD and rose through the ranks to become a professor in the department of Pediatrics, with joint appointments in Microbiology and Immunology, and Environmental Sciences and Engineering. She also had a variety of leadership roles, most recently as the director of the CEMALB, where she was the PI on a cooperative agreement with the EPA entitled “Convergence Science in Environmental Health – COSINE)” and directed a training program in the School of Medicine, the Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine. In January 2025 she transitioned to a new position at NIEHS/NHLBI where she was a tenured Senior Investigators and the Chief of a new NIH-wide Center examining the health effects caused by extreme weather conditions (heat, drought, etc.), natural disasters (floods, hurricane), and emerging environmental exposures (wildfires, airborne/waterborne pollutant). Due to a change in priorities of the current US administration, these research efforts were dismantled and Dr. Jaspers is now a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UNC Chapel Hill. For over 25 years, Dr. Jaspers has used in vitro, in vivo, human clinical, computational, and epidemiological experimental approaches to study the respiratory health effects of inhaled toxicants, including ambient air pollutants, military burn pit smoke, wildfire smoke, tobacco products, and cannabidiol vaping products. Dr. Jaspers is particularly interested in the mechanisms by which inhaled toxicants can modify respiratory immune health, the potential adverse health consequences susceptible populations may suffer, and developing innovative solutions to these exposures.
