Abstract For the first time a coupled flow- and transport model for dissolution of a residual gas phase avoiding the unphysical constant volume assumption is developed. The kinetic model describes the shrinking of the gas bubbles during dissolution. Calculating the lifetime of an oxygen bubble wall, we found that the Henry equilibrium model underestimates the lifetime by an error of 31 to 43%, whereas the constant volume approach overestimates the lifetime by an error of more than 100% over the whole range of bubble radii. Our main conclusion is that neither model is able to describe the physics of the dissolution process correctly.
