| Abstract | Die Begriffe „Biozönose“ und „Biotop“ waren bis weit in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hinein Schlüsselbegriffe der deutschsprachigen Ökologie, nicht zuletzt in ihrer engen Verbindung. Der Artikel beschreibt die Geschichte dieser Begriffe sowie des Begriffs „Ökosystem“ und deren Bedeutung für Forschung und Naturschutz. Betonte der Biozönose-Begriff vor allem die Interaktionen zwischen den Organismen eines Raums, so stand der Biotop für das räumliche und abiotische Gegenstück der Biozönose. Die ursprünglich sehr anspruchsvolle Definition der Biozönose, die bestimmte Eigenschaften derselben postulierte, brachte aber Probleme für eine Identifizierung und Klassifizierung von Biozönosen mit sich, bis hin zu der Frage, ob es Biozönosen überhaupt „gibt“. Heute wird der Biozönose-Begriff meist in einer eher pragmatischen, vereinfachten Form verwendet, in der Regel im Sinne des sehr weit gefassten englischen Community-Begriffs. Der Ökosystembegriff, als eine ebenfalls eher pragmatische, dem Denken der Physik angelehnte Betrachtung ökologischer Einheiten, die belebte und unbelebte Teile umfasst, ist seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts gleichfalls ein zentraler forschungsleitender Begriff geworden. Far into the second half of the 20 th century, Biozönose (biocoenosis) and Biotop (biotope) were key concepts in ecology in the German-language literature, not least in their intimate connection. The paper describes the history of these concepts and that of the ecosystem concept as well as their significance for research and biological conservation. While the biocoenosis concept emphasised the web of interactions between the organisms occurring together in a place, the biotope stood for the spatial and abiotic counterpart of the same. The very ambitious original definition of the biocoenosis, postulating a number of properties, led to problems in identifying and classifying them, up to the question of whether biocoenoses exist at all. Today, the biocoenosis is mostly used in more pragmatic, simplified forms in the sense of the very broad and general concept of the ‘community’. The ecosystem concept was formulated as a likewise rather pragmatic view of ecological units, close to the thinking of physics and comprising both biotic and abiotic parts of nature. Since the middle of the 20 th century, it has also become a pivotal guiding concept for ecological research. |
