BlueGreenRed@UFZ

The UFZ Campus as a systemic BlueGreenRed Solution Lab

The ‘BlueGreenRed@UFZ Campus’ investment project aims to develop and implement a scalable infrastructure concept that integrates blue (water infrastructure), green (urban greenery and ecological elements) and red (energy infrastructure) components. These infrastructures are designed to work together and offer multifunctional benefits that improve climate adaptation and resilience at the neighbourhood level.

The colour-coded system reflects different but interlinked functional areas:

• Green infrastructure facilitates the integration of vegetation and natural elements into urban public spaces, thereby improving the microclimate, biodiversity and quality of life.

• Blue-green (BG) infrastructure links green spaces with decentralised water management, thereby supporting rainwater retention, evapotranspiration and local reuse.

• Red infrastructure comprises decentralised technologies for the use and storage of thermal energy – such as near-surface geothermal systems – and contributes to climate-neutral heating solutions.

A selection process identified 16 measures to be implemented from 2027 onwards. These include rainwater retention systems, (solar) green roofs, deep geothermal systems and green facades. We will keep you informed here about the progress of the work.
