We investigate biogeochemical processes of major element cycles (carbon, nitrogen, sulphur) in freshwater and subsurface systems, especially those taking place in the absence of molecular oxygen. Special emphasis is placed on questions related to storage of renewable energy and biodegradation of hydrocarbons and halogenated organics. Techniques based on stable isotopes - compound specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) and stable isotope probing (SIP) – are essential tools of our experimental research. We cooperate with several Departments of the UFZ and external partners.
