Optimisation of nitrification for ammonium elimination in neutralised mine pit lakes (SeNi)
Mine pit lakes often contain high concentrations of ammonium. We want to find out, to which extend nitrification can contribute to ammonium elimination. We study the regulation of nitrification by environmental factors and lake properties. The goal of the project is to use this knowledge to enhance nitrification performance in lakes.
The microbial nitrogen turnover is measured in cooperation with Dr. Kay Knöller (Dept. Catchment Hydrology) using 15N tracer techniques. In a large scale field experiment in cooperation with the Institute for Groundwater Research (GFI), Dresden, we want to follow the fate of ammonium in the lake.
