Abstract The focus of this research was to investigate the mobilisation of arsenic species from industrial wastes of tin ore processing by natural water. The concentration of arsenic species in the tailing water was studied applying a hyphenated technique, coupling ion chromatography and ICP-MS. Iron(II) was analysed using a photometric method, which is based on the 2,2'-dipyridyl complex of Fe(II). The total concentration of iron was determined with ICP-AES and after reduction of Fe(III) by the photometric technique. The coupling of ion chromatographic separation of arsenic species and the ICP-MS detection resulted in detection limits of 0.9 μg/l for the arsenite species using a conventional cross flow nebulizer as adapter between both techniques and as sampling device in ICP-MS. In the water of the effluent of the tailing a total arsenic concentration up to 2.6 mg/l was found as As (III), As (V) and [FeAsOx]n- species. There were significant differences in the concentration of both the total arsenic concentration and the concentration of individual arsenic species depending on the sampling site. The distance between the water leakage out of the dam and the sampling site is of importance for the oxidation of As (III) and the formation of co-precipitates between As and Fe species in the water. The distribution of arsenic and iron species was estimated as a function of sample preparation and sample storage.
