Abstract Groundwater supplies more than 70% of the drinking water in Germany. The most important areas for groundwater recharge are agricultural and forestry used land. Because of intensive agricultural production on this sites the contamination of subsurface water with nitrate increased in the last years. Based on a statistical analysis of all federal states of Germany it can be shown, that in >10% of the groundwater measuring points the drinking- water limit value for nitrate with 50 mg NO3 -/l is crossed. Nitrogen balances for agriculture during the period 1970 to 1995 reached a maximum of surplus in the mid eighties and declined at the beginning of the nineties. Also in the future efforts are necessary to reduce groundwater contamination with nitrate, especially from diffuse sources.
