Abstract The results of measurements of the water and pollutant balance over three years in a regosol typical of the post-opencast mining landscapes south of Leipzig are presented. The amounts of leachate and evapotranspiration are determined in the Quaternary upper stratum containing plant rooting irrespective of the heterogeneous Tertiary strata below. Drinking water quality requirements are almost fully satisfied as far as the inorganic components dissolved in the soil water of the recultivated upper stratum are concerned. The outcropping carboniferous sands below the recultivated, rooted zone contain high levels of pyrite, and have low pH values and high acid potential in the soil water. They cause very high conductivity and excessive concentrations of sulphate, iron, aluminium and heavy metal ions. The findings confirm the major significance of the surrounded, aerated, pyrite-containing dump substrates for the quality of natural groundwater recharge. It was found that the movement of leachate towards the groundwater does not take place via the even moistening of the body of the dump. Instead, the leachate formed in the recultivated upper stratum is mainly transported along substrate boundaries and through coarsely textured structures (preferential flow).
