Abstract Agriculture is often responsible for environmental problems- especially in case of nitrogen. Nitrogen cycling is strongly connected with organic matter turnover. That means carbon and nitrogen turnover has to be studied together with the water fluxes in order to characterise land use strategies. In this paper two different landscape units from central Germany are compared be means of modelling techniques. The CANDY model is integrated in a GIS and database environment and provides good possibilities to investigate matter cycling on regional scale. The regions compared in this study have similar climate conditions and land use patterns. Despite these similarities results show remarkable differences in nitrogen exports into the environment because of the different water storing capacity of the soils.
