Abstract The possibility of an anaerobic biotransformation of chlorobenzene (CB) under nitrate- or sulfate--reducing conditions was examined in a laboratory glass column filled with sediment from a CB-polluted aquifer. Under all conditions, CB and nitrate disappeared partially and nitrite was formed, whereas sulfate concentrations remained stable. Small amounts of 3-chloro-catechol (3-CC) were detected in the influent of the column, and bacteria growing aerobically on CB as sole source of carbon and energy were isolated from the column, as well as bacteria growing anaerobically with succinate and nitrate. These results suggest that the disappearance of CB in the column system was initiated partially by aerobic CB-degrading bacteria, and that degradation products of CB were probably consumed by nitrate-reducing bacteria.
