Abstract The Salziger See lake was drained at the end of the 19th century because of nearby mining interests. Since then the water from the whole catchment has been raised 8 metres into a lake outlet, and the regained land has been used for farming. Now that the mines have been closed, a realistic option is the re-establishment of the lake by flooding. This would require the prior removal of the infrastructure which has grown up over the past 100 years. The sewage from local settlements must be diverted to treatment plant outside the catchment area. Some waste dumps and contaminated sites must be removed and the farmland would have to be used without phosphorus fertilisation before flooding. With systematic decrease of the nutrient load a lake with good water quality between mesotrophic and eutrophic states can be expected, parts of which will tend to meromixis because of salt contents in the depth. The reed belt will be narrow, because of steep shores of the basin, but fish productivity should be high. Landscaping and nature conservation interests can be harmonised with recreational activities and fishing.
