Abstract A phosphorus elimination plant, 'PELICON', was installed on the bank of Lake Burgsee to eliminate phosphorus and sulfide from the pelagial of the highly eutrophic meromictic Lake Burgsee. Nearly 50 m3/h of lake water are delivered to the PELICON by two pumps and pipes from the hypolimnion and monimolimnion, respectively. The water passes through three precipitation and flocculation basins and one flotation basin. Polyaluminium chloride and iron sulfate chloride were used to precipitate P and H2S. Due to flotation the flocs build a layer of flotation mud, which is then removed mechanically by a skimmer. The treated water is discharged back to the epilimnion. Over a period of 19 months nearly 570,000 m3 of lake water were treated and about 250 kg P eliminated as determined by three independent calculation methods. Total P and phytoplankton blooms have decreased slightly while the SECCHI disk tranparency increased somewhat. The delayed reaction of the lake is investigated in connection with the P content of the sediment.
