Abstract Recent recognition of the extent of arsenic contamination at agricultural sites in Germany and several other countries led to the need for assessing the risk of arsenic transfer from the soil into the food chain. The major objective of this thesis was to develop a new rhizosphere model (RhizoMath) which enables the integration of different rhizosphere processes that can influence temporal and spatial changes of arsenate availability in the rhizosphere. In order to do this the mathematical package MATLAB was coupled with the geochemical code PHREEQC. Current approaches on modelling surface sorption and nutrient uptake were critically discussed, partly extended and new approaches have been introduced. The comparison of model predictions and results of compartment system experiments have proven that the competitive behaviour of arsenate and phosphate (for sorption sites in the soil and for membrane transporters during their uptake) has a substantial impact on the dynamics of arsenate in the rhizosphere.
