Abstract Estimation of Nitrate leaching on a regional scale is an important issue. This paper presents results from different regions in Central Germany and with different methodical approaches from Lysimeter studies over model simulations with data on a plot level to solutions with highly aggregated data. It is very important to watch possible uncertainties due to aggregated input values and unknown initial values. Nitrogen import from the atmosphere is one of the most important parameters for a proper N-balance calculation. Carbon and nitrogen cycles are strongly connected. Independent from site characteristics an optimal carbon supply is necessary to avoid environmental pollution by nitrate in arable lands. Sensitivity of nitrate export into the hydrosphere on changes in farming intensity is dependent on groundwater production.
