Abstract We have investigated different sets of isomeric non-polar hydrocarbons using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) with different ionization techniques in order to determine the influence of structural features on ion formation and mobility. All ionization techniques used (corona discharge ionization, photoionization and 63Ni ionization) provided well-defined spectra. Corona discharge ionization permitted, in general, the most sensitive detection for non-polar hydrocarbons. Differences in ion mobility spectra as well as the detectable concentration
ranges were established and associated with the structure of a substance and the ionization technique. These differences were attributed to differences in ionization pathways.
