Abstract Acidic mining lakes are extreme biotopes strongly influenced by microbial activities. Few metazoan species can survive the low pH values (around 2.5). Due to the high concentrations of sulfate and iron, the microbiology of the lakes is dominated by bacteria of the sulfur and iron cycle. Organisms and processes involved in acidification are discussed. The high potential for biogenic Fe(II) oxidation at the sediment-water interface was demonstrated both by high-resolution porewater profiles and batch incubation assays. Of special importance are sediments which contain high microbial biomass despite their extreme chemistry as determined by phospholipid phosphate extraction. The sediments act as a source of organic and inorganic carbon. In contrast to typical freshwater sediments, sulfate reduction and iron reduction as opposed to methanogenesis, are terminal processes of organic matter degradation under anoxic conditions. The rates of sulfate reduction are typically very low. However, the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria offers an approach for biological neutralization of mining lakes.
