Abstract The Contingent Valuation method (CV) is applied to the economic valuation of the highlands
north of Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland. The values, as stated by the general public willingness to
accept compensation for the loss that would be generated due to proposed hydropower
developments, or willingness to pay for the benefits provided by the activity give clues about how
such numbers might be used to assist decision-making about the future management of the wilderness
area. This paper also reports a comparison between a new group-based CV approach, called Market
Stall, and conventional in-person interviews.
