Abstract

The diversion of river water into pit lakes is use for the primary filling of such lakes as well as part of the management strategy of filled pit lakes. One goal among others is the neutralization of acidic pit lakes. But the diversion of river water into pit lakes is accompanied by the risk of eutrophication resulting from the import of nutrients into the lakes by the river water.

The mechanisms of neutralization and the factors influencing the eutrophication of pit lakes by river water are discussed. Examples demonstrate that neutralization can fail during primary filling. Also the safety of neutralization by permanent inflow of river water into pit lakes may be limited. The majority of examples indicate no relevant eutrophication risk during primary filling. Nevertheless there is a risk of eutrophication caused by long-term inflow of river water.
