Abstract The biological role of guanidine has been underestimated for decades but has recently attracted attention due to the discovery of regulatory elements that sense guanidine and enzymes that degrade it in several bacteria. Many cyanobacteria have been shown to directly hydrolyse guanidine and utilize it as a nitrogen source. We deciphered their metabolic capacity for guanidine utilization as well as detoxification and made use of a guanidine-sensing riboswitch as molecular tool to drive photobiotechnological processes.
