Abstract Sensible heat flux (SH), a key surface heating factor, plays a crucial role in the variations of China’s summer rainfall, particularly over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and Iranian Plateau (IP). However, the synergistic effects of adiabatic heating over the Asian plateaus (including the hotter and drier Mongolian Plateau (MP)) and the relative contributions of surface heating anomalies from these Asian Plateaus (referred to as TIMPs) and oceanic anomalies to summer precipitation in China are remain unclear and less explored. This study reveals a decreased summer SH over the TP, in contrast to increasing SH trends in the IP and MP during 1979-2018. These variations are closely correlated with interdecadal changes in China’s rainfall patterns. Anomalous surface SH patterns induce to an abnormal anticyclone and ascent motion over the MP and Northern China, which can weaken the westerlies and the East Asian Monsoon. Consequently, this leads to increased precipitation in the Northwestern and Southern China and decreased precipitation in Northeastern China. Statistical analysis indicates that the SH changes over the TIMPs exert a more significant direct influence on China’s rainfall patterns than sea surface temperature anomalies, with the former’s total contributions being slightly higher but nearly equal in magnitude against the latter. Our study suggests that SH variations over the TIMPs are a key driver of changes in China’s precipitation, providing new insights into the mechanisms underlying interdecadal changes in China’s summer rainfall.
