Abstract With renewable energy shares in the electricity mix exceeding 50%, the defossilization of transportation and heat provision becomes increasingly important. There is no silver bullet for comprehensively transforming complex energy systems. While direct electrification prevails as the consensual priority mitigation strategy, clean hydrocarbons may play valuable medium- to long-term roles in specific fields of application. Controversial but potentially useful alternatives exist for decision-makers on two layers of energy planning. On a temporal layer, clean hydrocarbons may provide a costly yet effective defossilization option in the medium term, until end use technologies are comprehensively rolled out for direct electrification. Secondly, within clean hydrocarbons, biofuels may substitute synthetic fuels based on renewable energies, reducing both short-term infrastructure expansion needs and import dependence. We shed light on the trade-offs, synergies, and competitions in these two dimensions. After suggesting a consistent systematic terminology for different fuel types, we provide a summary of energy system complexities, including mitigation strategies and diverse sectoral demands. A structured technical description of the most relevant synthetic fuel production routes, their efficiencies and demands from a technical perspective, follows before presenting a brief overview of biofuel supply options. In two case studies, we summarize the results of research projects assessing the role of synthetic fuels and biofuels in energy system transformation before concluding along with three main research questions of interest and providing perspectives for research yet to come.
